Functionality in wood with the Spira Chair

johannes_foersom_and_peter_hiort-lorenzen_spira_chair.jpgAnybody who has had a sofa for many years will have probably experienced what I call the Unpleasant Coil Surprise. You know how it is: you sit on the sofa, enjoying a TV show when suddenly you feel something sharp poking your bottom. Turns out the coils underneath the upholstery are making a bid for freedom after being confined for so long.

Springs make sofas and other chairs more comfortable to sit on. I’m hoping, though, that the Spira Chair designed by Johannes Foersom and Peter Hiort-Lorenzen isn’t the type where the springs protrude from the seat after a certain period of time. To be fair, it doesn’t look like that will happen with this chair at all. What they did was sandwich a steel spring element between the back and the frame so that the back feels elastic to whoever is sitting in it.

Classic wooden seating: George Nakashima’s Straight-Backed Chair

Reinterpretations of classics are always happening. Maybe this is most evident of all in motion pictures and music. How many times have we seen new interpretations of old movies? Films like The Thomas Crown Affair and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory come to mind, though the original version of the latter was called Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. In music, there simply are so many of the old songs that have been re-interpreted by today’s artists – and even more are hitting the charts every year.

nakashima.jpgIn the furniture world, the re-interpretation of classics isn’t an unknown occurrence too. Restaurant chairs and tables, bar room furniture, hotel and airport seating – there are many examples of these, more contemporary versions of furniture that was initially released decades ago. Take, for instance, the Nakashima Straight Backed Chair. Originally introduced in 1948, it is available today via Design Within Reach. George Nakashima designed it for Knoll back in those days, and Knoll remains the chair’s manufacturer today. The chair is made from solid walnut; the spindles at the back are of solid hickory. It measures 30 inches high, 22.5 inches wide and 17.5 inches deep. The seat height is 17 inches.

Sitting pretty with the Ola Rune Mono Chair

ola_rune_mono_armchair.jpgWhen I think of a hammock, I think of being on the beach, a cool drink in hand, enjoying the breeze, listening to the waves crashing on the shore. It boggles my mind a bit how the Ola Rune Mono Chair came to be inspired by a hammock. And to think the chair was designed for the office environment – to promote stress-free meetings. I guess that’s the correlation between a real hammock and this chair, to get the user to relax.

It was designed by Ola Rune and manufactured by OFFECCT. While it’s true that the office market is the chair’s primary audience, I can see it doing well as part of a bar furniture set too. Reclining on the chair, a drink in hand, talking with friends and relaxing, yes, it would be most suitable. It can also be placed in a hotel setting or in a café; it looks to be pretty versatile that way.

AB Capital bar stools: Not just for the drinking before the bar

People admittedly come to bars to get a drink or two or more, but more than that, they oftentimes get a bite to eat too, whether before, during, or after drinking. Modern bar furniture designs today take that into account, hence the availability of bar stools of varying heights. While high stools made for at-the-bar drinking will probably never be phased out, lower bar stools at dining table-height are increasingly being seen.

Many people are not against the idea of eating dinner while sitting on a bar stool, though there’s this perception among some bar-goers that the elevated position of traditional bar stools help one’s digestion. Sort of like an urban myth – who knows if that indeed is true? In any case, there are two wooden bar stool models that somewhat typify what can be found in tavern seating today: the AB Capital 371 and the AB Capital 332/333.

Both types of chairs are constructed from solid beech. The AB Capital 332/333 stools have a tapering back, which can be fitted with a satin chrome grip. It measures 108.5 cm high, 45 cm wide, and 37 cm deep. Its seat height is pegged at 76 cm, making it suitable for placement either before a bar or a dining table.
