Steel wire furniture sometimes seems too industrial-looking for me. But occasionally they have a grace and fantasy-like quality that’s all their own. Take for instance the AGK Mercury Lounge Chair that I saw over at Kreiss, who is the exclusive distributor. I agree very much with how they describe it: the way it has been shaped and structured, it looks like it could be floating on air.
Though it was designed for outdoor use, there is no reason why it can’t be used indoors as well. Hence it can be applied as contract hotel seating: maybe in the lobby or the bedroom, or by the poolside. There is no need to worry about its ability to withstand the requirements of a commercial setting, which are after all more rigorous than residential ones. Though it looks light as air, it’s far more substantial than that. It weighs 35 lbs and measures 45 inches wide, 45 inches deep and 35 inches high. The frame is made of powder coated steel, which then hand-wrapped in dark-brown polypropeel synthetic rattan.
It turns out that the AGK Mercury Lounge Chair was designed by Allan Murillo for the Agassi Graff Kreiss Program. Yes, apparently the tennis stars have their own furniture line carried by Kreiss. Murillo, meanwhile, is co-head of Murillo, a company in Cebu, Philippines, that designs and makes furniture and accessories. Their creations are sold both locally and abroad. They have other types of seating that also have wire-rattan frames, and looking at them, I could imagine sitting in one as it floats in a pool or in the calm sea near the shore in front of a resort – you can find lots of beach resorts in the Philippines that offer this type of service to their guests. I’m not sure whether the Mercury Lounge Chair is that versatile, but that would be so fun to do.
